A kid raises her hand in the middle of independent work and says the four words every teacher has heard a thousand times. “I don’t get it.” Not what part. Not where she’s stuck. Just the whole thing, thrown up in the air like maybe you’ll catch it and hand back something usable.
Across the room, a kid finishes early and does what kids do when nobody’s shown them what finishing early actually looks like. He puts his head down. Or he starts bothering his neighbor. Or he just sits there, technically done and functionally stuck, waiting for you to notice.
And in the reading circle, two kids land on different answers to the same question, and one of them says “that’s wrong” in the flat, final tone kids use when they haven’t yet learned there’s a kinder way to disagree with a person and still disagree with their answer.
None of these are behavior problems. They’re routines nobody taught, dressed up as behavior problems because that’s what an untaught routine looks like from the outside.
We love a good classroom rule. Raise your hand. Be respectful. Do your best. They’re posted on bulletin boards in a hundred fonts, and they all have the exact same flaw. A rule tells a kid what not to do. A routine shows a kid exactly what to do instead. One of those is a poster. The other is something you can actually teach, practice, and reteach when it falls apart in week three.
Here are five routines we assume are obvious, and a plan for each one you could run tomorrow.
1. Asking a clarifying question instead of saying “I don’t get it”
“I don’t get it” isn’t laziness. It’s a kid who has never been taught the difference between not understanding and not knowing how to name what they don’t understand. We assume that skill shows up on its own. It doesn’t.
Try this tomorrow: Before independent work starts, put three sentence stems on the board and read them out loud together. “I understood up until ___.” “Can you show me the part where ___?” “I got an answer, but I’m not sure it’s right because ___.” Tell students that “I don’t get it” is now retired, not as a punishment, just as a fact, the way a word gets replaced with a better one. The first time a hand goes up with the old phrase, don’t answer the question yet. Point to the board and wait. By the third redirection, most kids will reach for the stem on their own.
2. What to do when you finish early
“Finish early” is not the same as “done.” There’s a difference between a kid who’s out of things to do and a kid who’s been shown exactly what comes next, and that difference is entirely up to us.
Try this tomorrow: This one starts with us, not with them. A routine for early finishers only works if the teacher has a system in place before the teaching begins. You can’t explicitly teach a plan that doesn’t exist yet.
So build the plan first. A book box on each desk or table, with a weekly check built into your own routine. Not an assumption; an actual check that confirms there are two real books in there. Not one dog eared magazine from August. A designated shelf or bin of premade activities that don’t need instructions read aloud, task cards, a folder of logic puzzles, anything a kid can pick up and start without asking what to do. The system has to exist and be stocked before you can ever expect a kid to use it independently.
Once the plan is real, teach it the same way you’d teach any other routine. Walk the class through exactly where the book box lives, what counts as a finished book box, and what the premade activity shelf has on it this week. Have two or three kids model picking an option and getting started without asking you first. Then hold your own end of the bargain. If the book box routine depends on two books being in there and you never check, the routine quietly falls apart, and it won’t look like your system failed. It’ll look like a discipline problem instead.
3. Disagreeing with a classmate’s answer, not the classmate
This is the one that makes or breaks a classroom’s culture of thinking out loud, and it’s also the one we most often assume kids will just figure out. They won’t, not without a model.
Try this tomorrow: This is exactly the gap our Accountable Math Turn & Talk sentence stems were built for. Before your next math discussion, pick two stems, “I see it differently because,” and “can you walk me through your thinking,” and have students practice them in pairs on a low stakes question first, something like their favorite lunch or the best season, before you ever ask them to disagree about an actual math answer. Once the words are familiar in a low stakes setting, they’re available under pressure. Math talk stops being a minefield and starts being the whole point.
4. Talk free routines, the ones a student should never have to ask about
Some things shouldn’t require a raised hand at all. Sharpening a pencil. Getting a tissue. Turning in a finished paper. If a student has to interrupt the lesson to ask permission for something that happens every single day, that’s not a student being needy. That’s a routine we never actually built.
Try this tomorrow: Pick one recurring interruption, the pencil sharpener is a good first target, and remove the asking entirely. Designate a spot, a caddy of pre-sharpened backups on a shelf, a specific corner, a small sign that flips from green to red when it’s in use, whatever fits your room. Walk students through it once, explicitly, the same way you’d teach a math procedure. “When your pencil breaks, you go here, you do this, you don’t ask me first.” Then hold the line for a week. The first few times a hand still goes up for it, point to the system instead of answering. That’s the whole reteach.
5. Skills kids “should” already have, and quietly don’t
Some routines don’t get taught because we assume a prior grade already covered it. Using glue is the classic example. By upper elementary, most of us stop teaching it explicitly, and most classrooms are still recovering from the puddle that resulted.
Try this tomorrow: Before the next project that involves glue, take ninety seconds to model it on purpose, out loud, like it’s brand new information, because for a surprising number of kids, it functionally is. “A dot in each corner and one in the middle. Not a line. Not a swirl.” Show the wrong way first, exaggerated, a little funny, then show the right way. Have every student practice on a scrap piece before they touch the real project. It feels almost silly to slow down for something this small. It saves you fifteen ruined projects and a sticky table for the rest of the unit.
The thread running through all five
Every one of these gaps has the same shape. Something we assumed was common sense turns out to be a skill nobody explicitly modeled. Kids aren’t guessing because they’re careless. They’re guessing because we handed them a rule and skipped the routine.
The fix isn’t more rules. It’s fewer of them, taught better, shown in action, practiced before they’re needed, and revisited without shame when they slip. That’s not a smaller ask than classroom management. It’s the actual definition of it.
